A LITTLE ABOUT MP3’s
The free sound effects downloads on this page are stereo MP3’s at 64Kbps, 22,050Hz. That is a common MP3 format used on the web. MP3’s made with these settings are roughly equivalent to the quality of FM radio, which is considerably less than CD quality. The MP3 audio file format is a compression codec designed for creating smaller files. While well made MP3’s can sound good, they are not as good as the uncompressed version of the same audio file (wav or aif), however it is an ideal format for interactive media that often has memory constraints.
When creating MP3’s, or any compressed audio file type (there are many formats to choose from), it’s best to start with the highest quality, uncompressed audio file you can get your hands on. Making an MP3 from an MP3 is actually re-compressing an already compressed file and it will turn the sound to mush, much like 'refried' beans. Also, working from an uncompressed audio file will allow you to experiment with different MP3 compression settlings, always being able to return to the uncompressed master sound file to try other MP3 settings until you find the ratio of file size-to-sound quality that works best for you.
When purchasing (licensing for your use) sounds at our online sound library, during checkout you will have a choice of uncompressed file types (wav or aif), from stereo or mono, sample rate and bit depth. Using these uncompressed files (wav files and aiff files), you can easily create your own MP3 sound files. There are many free software choices available that for converting aif or wav sound files into MP3’s; iTunes, Window’s Media Player both do a good job, as well as a myriad of others easily found on the internet.
